Access

We have been getting it wrong! It seems in recent years, access has slowly replaced authority. No, better yet, those two words have been used interchangeably when it comes to the aesthetics industry (this includes fashion, beauty, lifestyle, wellness). We went from overguarded to underguarded forcing us to confront the core issue: how did we get there?

While they both might allow entrance. They are two completely different things. Access is earned. Once upon a time, the fashion industry relied heavily on access. Getting in was not about finances, but taste and standards. The bar was so high that it was almost unreachable. Slowly, things have turned.

While it is important to acknowledge progress and the concept of achieving the unachievable or reaching the skies when it comes to being part of this industry, access is no longer granted based on high taste, but rather the amount spent and here is where the issue lies.

Authority

Authority has never been given, but is taken. Taken means only those able to carry the weight will choose to. Authority gives access to people. When it comes to this industry, authority defines what stands, what leaves, what changes and what remains.

It used to be a heavy for the person having to make this kind of decisions as it would sometimes make them look cold, emotionless. Time has passed and it's no longer the case. Everyone has authority over everything and the industry does not know where to stand.

It is, however, incredible to acknowledge more people entering an industry they could only dream of back in the days, nevertheless, it does not excuse how low standards have gotten as if the industry itself is having an identity crisis. Where is taste now? Can anyone with authority gives access to anyone with great finances?

Access Is Not Authority

It is clear that access and authority have their respective definitions, the problem remains: it seems they are interchangeable. This has gravely impacted the fashion and beauty industry particularly as standards became less of a requirement and taste is no longer a debatable issue before inviting someone in.

Brands are now focusing on trends instead of quality and craftsmanship and the Nation of Sensaciato can no longer remain silent. Silence is acceptance and we refuse to grant mediocrity access.

That being said, some brands, against all odds, seem to keep their head high and prioritize craftsmanship and art over trends. To name a few, Schiaparelli is the embodiment of art in fashion, Biologique Recherche is intentionally result-driven and Santa Maria Novella does not chase reinvention.

A tale as old as times, art is authority and granting access is a privilege. Access Is Not Authority and confusing them is clear defiance.

Conclusion

Access and Authority have been misused for far too long, it is time to set the record straight. What happened to taste? What happened to standards? How is access granted, by taste or by finances?

Therefore, we recommend:
